2002

The first recipient of the John Munley Memorial Swimming Scholarship in 2002 was

recipient…member of the MSU record-setting 200 medley relay team…set
season best marks at the Big Ten Championships in the 50 free (20.82) and 200 Free (1:44.04)…set personal best times in the 50 and 100 free…member of the 200 free relay squad that finished ninth at the Big Ten Championships

Sophomore: Competed in the 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free at the Big Ten
Championships.

Freshman: Competed in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley at the 2000 Big Ten Championships.

High School: A four-year letterwinner...all-state honorable mention in the 200 IM and 100 back his final year...MVP and a team captain as a senior...a National Honor Society member.

Personal: Born October 29, 1981... son of Steven and Terry DeFauw.

Junior: Set career-best times in the 400 IM (4:11.73) and 1650 free (15:57.05) at the Big Ten Championships...finished second in the 1000 free against Oakland (9:56.32)...recipient of the John Munley Memorial Scholarship...Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Sophomore: John Munley Memorial Scholarship recipient for an outstanding level of competitiveness, dedication to the sport and loyalty to MSU.

Freshman: Posted personal-best times at the Big Ten Championships in the 200, 500 and 1,650 free.

Prep: Four-year letterwinner...four-time conference champion in the 500 free...placed seventh in the state in the 500 free his senior year...also lettered in track and cross country...took seventh at the YMCA Nationals in the 1,500 meter.

Personal: Born Dec. 5, 1982...son of John and Pamela Wilson...a building construction management major.

Matt Wisniewski

Sophomore: Member of school record-breaking 200 medley relay team with Ian Clutten, Patrick Saucedo, and Rudolf Wagenaar (1:29.22) and 400 medley relay team with Clutten, Wagenaar and Nick Harley (3:17.05)...swam personal-best times at Big Ten Championships in the 50 free (20.68) and 100 free (45.8)... Most Improved Award winner...Academic All-Big Ten...honorable mention CSCAA Academic All-American.

Freshman: Finished eighth in the Big Ten Championships in the 400 free relay with Patrick Saucedo, Nick DeFauw, and Joe Brennan (3:02.27)...swam personal bests at Big Ten Championships in the 200 free (1:42.0), 100 free (46.4) and 50 free (21.13)

Prep: A four-time letterwinner...captain of the swim team senior year...three-time all-state selection...four-time all-district honoree...team MVP junior and senior years...four-time Scholar Athlete...set a personal record time of 1:44.47 in the 200 free and 100 free (47.7) as a senior...swam for the Zone Team of Team Michigan in 2001...member of the student council.

Personal: Born Jan. 25, 1984...son of Aaron and Linda Wisniewski...a marketing major.

The John Munley Memorial Scholarship Recipient for 2005-2006 was

Matt Torres

Freshman: Competes in multiple events... finished a season-high second place, behind teammate Ian Clutten in the 200 breast against Purdue (2:17.01)... set seven career bests at the Big Ten Championships.

Prep: Four-year letterwinner... set personal best times in the 500 free and 200 IM... finished third in the state in the 500 free and seventh in the state in the 200 IM... earned All-Section honors in his senior year... nominated for All-American honors as a senior... named team captain and helped team finish with a No. 19 state ranking as a senior... four-year varsity letterwinner.

Personal: Born Nov. 8, 1986... son of Neftali and Vivian Torres... an electrical engineering major... cousin Louis is currently swimming at Northwestern.

Freshman: Member of the MSU `C' relay that finished 15th (7:11.61) in the 800 free at the Ohio State Invitational ... Took second in the 1000 free (10:02.71) against St. Bonaventure.

Prep: Four-year letterwinner ... Earned all-league honors all four years ... Member of Pointe Aquatics club team.

Personal: Born Nov. 16, 1986 ... Son of Robert and Natalie VanBeek ... A criminal justice major.

2007- 2008

Freshman: Scored team points in the 100 and 200 back and the 200 IM in season opener versus Iowa (10/28) ... Placed first in 50 free against Purdue (1/13) ... Notched fourth-place showing in the 50 free (21.70) versus Oakland (1/19) ... Competed in 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events at Big Ten Championships.

High School: Four-time letter winner in swimming at Stevenson under coach Jeff Shoemaker ... Earned All-America honors in five events ... Also earned all-state and all-conference honors.

Personal: Born Dec. 24, 1987 in Detroit, Mich. ... Son of John and Maryanne Massman... Criminal justice major.
